The Chao Phraya was not always one river. Before 1538, it wound through a series of loops so wide that a barge could spend a full day covering ground a walker crossed in an hour.
Successive Ayutthaya-era kings ordered shortcut canals dug across the necks of those meanders, and the river straightened itself into the channel Bangkok now sits astride. The old loops survive as Khlong Bangkok Noi and Khlong Bangkok Yai, quiet water where the main current used to run.
